The Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust, which was established in 2000, aims to provide a safer and improved quality of life for communities in Cambridgeshire by promoting partnerships between communities, business the police and other organisations.
The Trust encourages self-help and supports initiatives that make a difference.
The Trust is perhaps best known to date for its Bobby Scheme, which gives practical support to elderly victims of burglary.
The scheme employs four carpenters, who visit the homes of vulnerable burglary victims aged over 60 to secure their homes, fit extra security devices and offer practical advice.
The scheme has helped more than 9,200 older people in its first five years, and has seen a significant drop in the number of repeat-victims. Fewer than one per cent of people helped by the Bobby Scheme have again fallen victim to burglars. For comparison, 10 per cent of burglary victims across the county suffer a repeat offence.
The Trust’s second objective is to create a young drivers’ programme to improve driving skills both before and after the young person passes their driving test with the intention of cutting casualties on Cambridgeshire roads among the under 24s.
